Course Description

As a caring helping professional, you want to know Motivational Interviewing. But finding a good training can be difficult, costly, and inconvenient, especially if you are attending an out-of-town, live training. Training in essential skills like Motivational Interviewing should be inexpensive and easily accessible. That's why I developed this course that you can take in the convenience of your home or office. This course is designed for counselors and therapists of all kinds; psychologists, social workers, marriage and family therapists, addiction counselors, life and health coaches, nurses, doctors, anyone who is helping people make healthy decisions in their lives.

Training includes 13 modules with animated videos, post-tests, and exercises for you to really learn the skills, not just the theory. Participants receive a certificate of completion after attending all sessions, passing all post-tests, and submitting a course evaluation.

Upon completion of this online training, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe how MI can be used as a stand alone treatment or as an adjunct to other forms of treatment or research programs.
  2. Recite the four factors that comprise the “spirit” of MI and describe how they relate to behavioral change.
  3. Ask the two key questions that comprise the “readiness ruler” technique to assess a client’s motivation to change.
  4. Demonstrate the use of two follow-up questions to the readiness ruler that can increase client motivation.
  5. Demonstrate the use of the 4  fundamental, “OARS” skills in a conversation.
  6. Provide at least 50% reflective listening responses during a conversation.
  7. Demonstrate two ways to respond to and increase client “change talk.”
  8. Demonstrate two ways to respond to and reduce “sustain talk.”
  9. Demonstrate at least two strategies for eliciting client “change talk.”
  10. Use four techniques to provide information to clients that are designed to increase client acceptance and reduce client resistance.
  11. Describe the source, importance and function of client resistance or discord in a therapeutic relationship.
  12. Demonstrate two ways to manage clients’ resistance or discord and non-adherence.
  13. Recognize two signs that clients are ready to develop a change plan.
  14. Develop a SMART change plan and ask one question to secure client commitment.

The instructor, Dr. William Matulich, Ph.D. is a clinical psychologist with over 30 year of clinical experience, a member of MINT, the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers, since 2006, and an experienced MI practitioner, author, instructor, and lecturer.
